The Need
There is a high rate of juvenile delinquency and gang involvement in the Salt Lake City area. These problems are due to a lack of social opportunities that are available to this generation and the degree of social disorganization present within our community. Other contributing factors to gang involvement include: poverty, racism, lack of social policies, and misdirected social controls. These problems create a need for the community to provide alternatives for a productive lifestyle. Project 180 exists to meet that need.
The Target Population
The target population includes “gang involved” individuals and those “at risk” of becoming gang involved, with emphasis focusing on those of the juvenile age; however, adults are eligible also. The primary community to be reached is West Valley City. However, this program is not limited to only West Valley. It is the desire of Project 180 to reach gang members everywhere.
Mission Statement
Project 180 is a group of separate entities working together to reduce gang activity by displacing components of gang life and inserting resources and opportunities for a productive and successful life.
